Housing of the Ktunaxa
The housing of the people of the Plateau mainly consisted of teepees and lodges. The Interior Salish made a different kind of teepee, compared to all of the other tribes. The Interior Salish teepees were much different than the buffalo-skin teepees. How they made them was a different story. First, they would dig out holes in gravel that were close to riverbeds. The pits that they dug were lined with spruce boughs and a cone shaped like a teepee was built over the pit that was dug. The cone was then covered with some more boughs. Some logs were then retrieved and shaped into steps. Then, the steps were placing in the opening. The overall structure had the dimensions of 5-15 meters wide or long, and was 2-3 meters deep.
The other tribes made a lodge-like house. The other tribes made the lodge out of either cedar slab, or lean-tos made from spruce bark. The lodges made of the cedar slab had a much more different shape than the lean-tos made lodges. The cedar slab lodges had roofs than ran all the way to the ground. The roofs were also slanted. This gave the cedar slab lodges a much more different shape compared to the lean-tos lodges. The lean-tos lodges were basically two tents that are facing each other.
